Adelaide suffers through hottest day in 70 years
Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 12:45 AM

Adelaide is experiencing its hottest day in 70 years.

The mercury reached 45.5 degrees Celsius in the city this afternoon.

The Weather Bureau says Adelaide's hottest day on record was 46.1 degrees in January 1939.

This week could see Adelaide equal its hottest heatwave on record.

The record of six days of 40 degree heat or more was set in January 1908.

On Tuesday Adelaide had a top temperature of 43.2 degrees.

The Weather Bureau is forecasting a further five days of 40 degrees or more for the city.

The State's longest heatwave happened last March, with 15 days above 35 degrees.

what not to do...
Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 4:07 AM

Note to self: Do not carry cooking pots with you when you're walking on the streets at night in Adelaide.

#1
Drunk man says: Aw love, you shouldn't have. Making me dinner and all. *grins and comes near me* (my reaction - smile sweetly and walk very fast)

#2
Boys on the street say: Hey, can I have some?
Me: There's nothing left, sorry.

Boys: (jokingly) Aw, that's not very nice. Didn't leave me any... Look at her. She sees two hungry guys on the street but chooses to ignore us...

oh well. the pot WAS empty, you know.

End.

Part 1
Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 6:19 AM

"You're going to show me a giant pencil?"

Looking through the foggy glass of the car windscreen, she watched the fluctuating scenery of industrial grounds and the suburbs.

"Not just any pencil. The tallest pencil you have ever seen."

She smiled but inside she was laughing. That Faber Castell one that I've seen in the brochure? Well, but I haven't seen the real thing.

"So where is the pencil?"

"Let me just pass this traffic light... and turn left here," - with a distinctly huge pencil on the right - , "and it's a wrong turn..."

"Is that it?" She pointed to the grand pencil, eyes alit.

"Ah, there it is!"

"Can we go closer?"

He pulled up to the side of the factory and they gazed at the pencil together.

"I think I have one at home," she quipped. "Except, smaller."

They laugh.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

And I thank you for showing me that pencil, though in retrospect it wasn't really a giant pencil I needed. All I longed for was a word or two of reassurance and protectiveness.

Like when you told me, "Don't cry." and squeezed me tightly as if you were afraid I would crumble. That is bigger than a giant pencil to me.

It doesn't mean that the giant pencil doesn't matter. And it doesn't mean that I don't want giant pencils in our relationship. I just want you to remember that it's the amount of love you put in that makes the pencil a giant.
